Translations

If a document is in a language other than English, a written translation will be required, as it is essential that you understand what is being signed. If the document does require further legalisation after notarisation, the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office will not affix the apostille without a translation.

If you arrange for a professional translation, the translator should add his/her name, address, relevant qualification and a certificate stating "Document X is a true and complete translation of Document Y, to which this translation is attached."

It is always the foreign language document which is legally binding. The English translation is only ever a guide. If there are any differences between the main foreign document and the English translation, it will be the foreign wording which will prevail.
